Class of 2008 CP Academy Celebration
On June 5th 2008, we had the CP Academy Class of 2008 Celebration in the Longfellow Middle School Auditorium. It was a fine expression of grace and exuberance with about 250 students, parents and family, teachers and friends in attendance. Dinner was served before the actual celebration program. The preparation of the celebration was a fine example of the cooperation between staff and students with respect to planning. The whole affair lasted about three hours with many a teary eye by program's end. It was truly a moving event - like a rite of passage ceremony. Thanks to those staff, students and parents who worked behind the scenes to make it all happen. We all offer much love and respect to the CP Academy Class of 2008. See the video.

4th Annual Student Showcase and BBQ
The Student Showcase and BBQ was a fabulous success. It was held on the 25th of May at The San Pablo Park Frances Albrier Center. It was the biggest one yet with about 100 parents and students in attendance. There were many examples of student work presented including art work from Mr. Knight's class. A definite highlight of the day was a student performance as directed by Ms. Bell of excerpts of William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream". A good time was had by all - see the slide show. Thanks to those parents, staff and students who worked behind the scenes to make it happen.

The Buddy Reading Program
This year the Buddy Reading Program was a resounding success (click here for more info). The Buddy Reading Program is a community based service learning program. CP Academy Berkeley High juniors read to and with kindergarten and first grade students of varying developmental levels in their reading progress. As part of this, the juniors, in English class, read literature in which characters struggle with and profess the importance of literacy. The program also examines the implications of the racial achievement gap in test scores and performance.

Budget Cuts
The Governor's proposed $4.8 billion cut to education would be detrimental to your childs education. Attached you will find four letters: one to each Governor Schwarzenegger, Assemblywoman Hancock, Assemblyman Swanson and Senator Perata for everyone to download sign and mail, email or fax (please be sure to type your name, address, phone number and date in at the top and to type your name underneath you signature at the bottom).

Berkeley High School Senior Activities
Many senior activities are coming down the pike. Take a look at almost all of them summed up.

CPA College Information Session
On Saturday, 15 March 2008 from 10 AM to 12 noon in the Berkeley High School College and Career Center, CPA will be presenting its 3rd annual College Information Session given by our College Advisor, Angela Price. This will be a unique opportunity to learn all about the college application process. You will learn what you must do as a freshman to a senior to apply and get accepted to the college of your choice. If you are student or the parent of a student we implore you to show up. We will also have Flora Russ there with each student’s transcript to realistically assess each parent’ s and child’s goal of attending college. Please, parents and students are requested to attend. Again, the 3rd annual CPA College Information Session will be held on Saturday, 15 March 2008 from 10 AM to 12 noon in the Berkeley High School College and Career Center. See you there. Check out the video.

Financial Aid for Seniors
FINANCIAL AID – Now is the time to work on your application for financial aid. All colleges require the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). I strongly recommend that you apply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov . This is the only official site for filling out the FAFSA. Beware of other sites that charge money to fill out the FAFSA. In order to file electronically, you will need two PIN numbers – one for one parent and one for the student. These are your electronic signatures. You can apply for the PIN numbers at www.pin.ed.gov If you haven’t done so already, I recommend that you do so now. You can start the FAFSA while you are waiting to receive your PIN numbers.

Final Exam Schedule
Next Week, Wednesday-Thursday, the fall final exams will be held. Two exams will be given each day followed by lunch. After lunch teachers will be in their classroom for Makeup or Review. Students who do not have makeup or review are free to leave school in order to study for the next day's exams.

Wednesday 1/23 will be exams for Periods 1 and 2
Thursday 1/24 will be exams for Periods 3 and 4
Friday 1/25 will be exams for Periods 5 and 6

CP Academy AP English Article in National News Media

Parent Council Meeting

First Parent Council Meeting of the year. 21st of September 2006 from 7 to 9 pm in the College and Career Center.

June 14th AP English Community Meeting

You are invited to a community meeting sponsored by the Leadership Council of Community Partnerships Academy to discuss the issue of whether and how to offer AP English within our CP Academy program. The Leadership Council is investigating this issue and wants to hear from all parts of our community.

This community meeting is on Wednesday, June 14 in the College and Career Center at 6:00 p.m. The Leadership Council needs your input to better understand this issue and the implications of our decisions.

A proposal has been made to separate our junior English classes into AP and non-AP. This would also separate the History classes as those are scheduled in tandem, and would mean the two groups of students would receive different curriculum.

The Leadership Council does not want to make a decision without hearing from all in our community. Ultimately we hope the dialogue from the June 14th meeting will help us create the best possible way to meet all of our students¹ needs.

College Information Session

Almost all of us in CP Academy would like our child to go to college. It is one of the best ways to ensure our children will acquire the proper tools to live life on their terms. It is very important to understand the college preparation/application/admission process for this to happen. On

Saturday, 18th of February, 2006 from 10 am to 12 noon in the Career and College Center, the Parent Council will host a college information session. It will be given by Ilene Abrams, our college advisor, and Dr. Rivas, Vice-President of Student Services at VISTA college. It is for ALL CP Academy parents – not just juniors and seniors. There is something at each grade level (that particularly means freshmen and sophomores) that you must do in order to make the transition to college smoothly. It will discuss a four year plan – what your child should be taking over your four years in high school to ensure that your child can get into the particular college of his or her choice (like taking Adv. Bio. or AP Bio., not Bio. 1 for UC type colleges). Both Ms. Abrams and Dr. Rivas will talk about courses, grades, SAT's, college essay, teacher recommendations, extra curricular activites, and all the other things that go into a weighted sum of a successful college application. Last, but certainly not least, Flora will have each student's transcript available and there will be specific information on how to interpet the transcipt for parents.

This is a really important event as it is a pragmatic analysis of how to tie together the four years of high school to reach you and your child's post-secondary school goals. In particular, the interpetation of transcipts brings the college search down to a very personal level. Please, don't miss this event.

The California High School Exit Exam 2005-06

The California High School Exit Exam will be administered by BHS on Tuesday and Wednesday, the 7th and 8th of February. Your child is expected to show up at the Old Gym (Building M) on Milvia Street on both days at 7:30 am. Look for signs on the doors of the Old Gym for your room assignment.

The exam is divided into two parts - English and Math. All students MUST take and pass the exam inorder to graduate from High School. Evidently the exam is long and grueling. Your child is to sit at tables in the gym all day and take the test. It is recomended that each student brings something to eat(at least a power bar) and something to drink (maybe a juice box). Good Luck!

Finals are upon us! Here is the schedule:
