audience? What is author's goal? Discuss why she uses ethnography and
what we can expect to learn from this exercise. (Ethnography = tool of
sociologists and cultural anthropologists studying groups of people;
immersing themselves in the culture they are studying in order to more
accurately represent that culture.)

This is preparation for socratic seminar on Thursday, (a standard format
for discussions of readings in college).

don't talk over anyone; don't argue. Refer to the text whenever possible.
Every time it counts as extra credit.

Give outer circle assigned to monitor contributions of one inner circle
person. After 20 minutes, switch so other students have time in the inner
circle.

First circle discusses:
1. What made life particularly hard for the hotel and restaurant workers
in Florida? (refer to the text)
2. What role should the government play, if any, in changing their
situation?
3. What types of regulations could be passed that might be helpful to
these workers?
4. What types of agencies are need in counties like this one, with large
tourism businesses and a large number of low-paid hotel and restaurant
employees?

Switch inside/outside and continue the conversation:
1. Do some types of assistance promote self-sufficiency while others
promote dependency?
2. Is it ok for some people to be dependent upon the community/government
for assistance? Who and why?
3. Why and what type of health problems might workers in these industries
have more of than middle income people in the same vicinity?
4. What types of legal problems might workers in these industries have
more of than middle income people in the same vicinity?

Debrief: What is happening to low wage jobs in the current economy? What
is the impact of the crisis on education, the traditional road out of the
low-wage workforce? What role should the government play in addressing the
economic crisis? What role can communities play in addressing the
economic crisis?
