Monday, October 29: No Journal. Mid-semester grades. Test preparation. Debatable issues regarding race. Homework: study for quiz – use study guide.


Tuesday, October 30: Quiz, followed by video.


Wednesday, October 31: Individual discrimination, Institutional discrimination, and Structural discrimination. Reading and notetaking in class. How does racism continue to shape American society? In small groups, identify research questions that might be explored regarding the major institutions of American society: work, government, education, media, courts, health, family, and religion. Homework in journal: Ask three different adults: 1) In what area do you think racism continues to have the most negative impact on our society? 2) What could be done to change that?


Thursday, November 1: Race and language: The “N” word workshop and class discussion. Homework in journal: Reflect on the presentation and class discussion – Make a connection, a comment, or give feedback. Then discuss the question: how have centuries of deliberate racial violence and oppression affected the language we use?


Friday, November 2: Race and La Raza – What’s in a name?
