Incidents
in the Life of a Slave Girl
CPA –
Eleventh Grade
Garret
Project

Earlier this semester, as part of an integrated project with
their English, math, history and art classes, CPA juniors created this
full-size replica / 3D mural of the garret described in Harriet Jacobs’ slave
narrative, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. This garret represents the space wherein
Harriet Jacobs hid for seven years to escape slavery. To complement this piece, (a visual
representation of paradox, since Ms. Jacobs found freedom in such extreme
confinement) students wrote literary analysis on paradox in the slave
narrative.
